Craft Room Cabinets Progress

December was  a tough month.  My dad went in for a simple heart procedure, and ended up having surgery to remove his pacemaker because of infection it had caused in his heart.  He has been on intravenous antibiotics and will be for another two weeks at least.

Then our family got this flu bug and let me tell you, it never ends!  I came down with it Christmas eve and am still congested and coughing.  Because we were sick, we stayed home Christmas day and had a very quiet (except for sniffling and coughing) Christmas.  With all this going on, I was lucky to get the Christmas tree decorated, Actually the kids did it and I think it is the most beautiful tree we've ever had.  I put out the nativity, which I painted this year. I'll show you those later...when I find the usb cord for my camera!

Last week my brother and his family came for a belated Christmas.  Mom and dad were going to go to his house this year, but then dad wound up in the hospital.  We made dad wear a mask, and we did a lot of hand washing.

I am finally feeling human again, but still not 100%.  Before all this, I had put together two cabinets in my craft room.  The doors aren't built yet, but I hope to get those done in the next week or two.  I've built the shell of the middle unit, but again, the pictures are locked inside my camera.  Everything was shuffled around to get the tree in, and somehow, I've misplaced it.

I was amazed how fast I could get these cabinets together with the right tools.  Of course there was a learning curve and I made some mistakes, but by the third cabinet I had it down pat.

I used the  JIG IT® Shelving Jig from Rockler to quickly and easily drill pin holes for movable shelves. The middle shelf is fixed in place for stability.  To attach the sides to the base and top I used my Kreg Jig, also from Rockler.  It is the best thing since sliced bread!  It takes a little thinking about where to place the holes (I speak from experience), but once you figure it out, it's a piece of cake. Bread and cake...this is beginning to be a high carb paragraph.  It must be my diet talking.

Caveat: Yes I joined Rockler as an affiliate, and yes I will earn a little pocket change if you buy from my link, but I any product that I endorse is only because I've used it and love it.  I also have purchased several things from Rocker and have always been satisfied.  If you don't wish to use my links you can just type Rocker in your search engine.

The empty shell.  The dirty look is from photo editing.  To get the pictures bright enough in this windowless room, I have to lighten them, which leaves yellowish dirty looking blotches.  If anyone has any tips to avoid this, I'd love to know.  I currently have one overhead fluorescent light, so it's hard to get pictures.  I'll soon have much more lighting...yeah!

In case water ever does leak into the basement, I built a platform for these cabinets.

You can see we've got one piece of beadboard on the end wall.  We need to finish installing the rest of the beadboard, prime and paint it, and add doors.  I will also be building another shelf where those buckets and the  leaning board are.  there will be a solid door straight on and a glass pane door just to the right of the black and white cabinet.

Starting next week, I will be moving my craft supplies and sewing down.  I am so ready!

  1. I can't wait to see your craft room finished. It looks like it will be beautiful!
I hope you and your dad are feeling better. Happy New Year to you and your family!

  2. made it through the holidays, Debbie. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. We were all sick with that flu too, but it was a good Christmas all the same. I've been thinking about you, and how you've been fairing with that craft room of yours. So glad to hear you are almost ready to move into it.
Happy New Year to you, dear friend!!!
    Love, and hugs.

  3. You are going to love it! Hope your dad and the rest of the family are healing. It seems so many were sick over the holidays.
